Where Local Life Comes Alive

About Potchefstroom

Nestled on the banks of the Mooi River, Potchefstroom (often called “Potch”) is a vibrant university town in the North West Province of South Africa, founded in 1838. Steeped in history, it was the first town north of the Vaal River and once served as the capital of the South African Republic.

Today, the city is known for its strong education sector (home to North‑West University and several schools), its sporting facilities (often called the “Home of Sport” in the region) and its clean air, thanks to low industrial activity.

Potchefstroom offers a rich mix of historical monuments, tree-lined avenues (including one of the largest oak tree avenues in the southern hemisphere), nature reserves, lively markets and a warm, welcoming feel. Whether you’re here to dine, explore, relax or attend an arts festival, Potchefstroom has something to offer - and this directory aims to bring the best of the city to you in one place.
